As you know, Grant's is all about good quality products - they should be durable, functional, timeless, and actually worth the money. With that said, we were recently introduced to Kenton Sorenson leather goods. They're handmade in Wisconsin from the highest graded areas of reserve leather sides from a 130 year-old midwestern tannery utilizing unbranded male cattle hides raised by American ranchers, and organically treated without artificial colors or chemicals. The leather is soaked in a tanning liquor derived from oak bark for six weeks and then dried for several days, a process that allows the leather to develop a rich caramel color with age. We also love that leather craftsmen Kenton Sorenson was a classically trained barber.

Carter and Bond in London is one of the most unique barber shops we've encountered: "A unique and relaxed old school meets quirky West London emporium for men." Carter and Bond is a place for both the refined gentleman in a finely tailored suit and the big kid who refuses to wear a suit. They offer gents old fashioned hot towel wet shaves and haircuts in the middle of a relaxed, fun shop that sells a treasure trove of mixed goods - comic books and cuff-links, toy robots and watches. They also sell a carefully selected range of grooming products, including Grant's Golden Brand Pomade.
From their Website: Carter and Bond was established in 2002 and is one of the longest established male grooming shops in the UK. The concept remains the same today as when we opened: to offer a very wide range of the finest products available; to constantly be on the look out for new brands; to present our offering in a simple yet stylish website (and mail-order catalogue), and to back this all up with rapid order dispatch and attentive customer service. We are proud to have played a part in bringing about greater awareness for quality male grooming products and following in the wake of businesses like ours, any journalist or editor worth his/her salt will long ago have written about the recent growth in the male grooming market. And every day yet more men begin to appreciate for themselves the benefits of upgrading from the mass-market toiletries to be found at the high street chemist. Where we tread first others usually follow and we know many of our customers appreciate the efforts we go to in being first to market with so many ranges.

Actor, director, producer, composer, comedian, the talented Mr. Charlie Chaplin was born this day 1889 (died Christmas Day of 1977).
Check out this 1950 New Yorker article on the day in the life of Mr. Chaplin.
“Words are cheap. The biggest thing you can say is ‘elephant’.”
“The saddest thing that I can imagine is to get used to luxury.”
“To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it!”
“Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in a long shot." -C. Chaplin

“You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.” -JR

We're proud to announce that Grant's Golden Brand Pomade is now available in Milwaukee - at gents-only barbershop Stag, to be specific. Opened in November 2010, this "old school barbershop for the modern man" offers precision haircuts and straight razor, hot towel shaves. The atmosphere is a coherent mix of old and new. Alongside espresso machines, a leather couch, and stainless steel accents, you'll also find barn wood shelves and antique barber chairs. But what really adds another dimension of character to the barbershop's style is the tribute to the owner's late father Rick Stern, the man behind the face of the barbershop: the caribou (stag) Rick Stern shot in Toronto over 20 years ago, an antelope from Wyoming that also belonged to him, a chandelier the owner and her mother made from an antler he had in the basement.
Owner Jess Stern (pictured in the barber chair above) is a Milwaukee native and an internationally trained precision mens' barber with over 10 years' experience. She was also a Milwaukee Brewcity Bruiser Rollergirl. We have to admit we're not completely familiar with this role, but it sounds like it was fun times. Jess was more than gracious to tell us a little more about the barbershop:
My dad is the logo as you know. I was going through photos after he passed away. I found the photo that the logo was designed after and thought "when I open a shop, this is my logo." Two months later I found the space. The ironic thing is that I had been looking for a space for years and I stumbled upon one that was once an old barbershop in the 40s. The landlord's father had started the barbershop, and then he took it over after his father passed away. When he retired he leased the space to multiple business owners, none of which were barbers. I am happy to say that I have brought the space back to its roots. My mom, Sandy Stern, and I did a lot of the build out. Although I am the sole owner, I could not have done it without her. She helped me in creating a place that feels like home to not only myself, but to everyone who walks through the door. It's a place I am truly proud of. The vibe is so comfortable that I never feel like I am going to work. My barbers and I make an effort to know everyone's name. Every man is greeted with a smile and a handshake.
And that's the way it should be. So "be a man, go to Stag."

The film world lost a legend over the weekend when film director Sidney Lumet passed away at the age of 86. Lumet did not just make great films he made great NEW YORK films including 12 Angry Men, The Pawnbroker, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Prince of The City, and Network. But his work went beyond the boroughs of New York as he also directed classics such as The Verdict, The Wiz, Equus, and Murder on the Orient Express. Text and image via New York Public Library.
"Sidney Lumet was one of the greatest directors in the long history of film. Compelling stories and unforgettable performances were his strong suit." - Steven Spielberg.

It's Spring so rain's not unusual but it feels like it's still winter here. So ironically we're envying people in old black and white photos that are presumably basking in the sun and blue skies.
