Jamel Shabazz is well known for documenting 1980s New York, or as he dubbed it "A Time Before Crack."  Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he picked up his first camera in 1975 at age 15, but it wasn't until 1980 - when he came back to a different, more vibrant Brooklyn after spending three years in Germany in the military - that he actively started recording the world around him. "We are talking about a time before the crack and AIDS epidemic. These were times when the majority of our families had two parents and both the music and programs on television were about elevation. As a young photographer I saw all this beauty and positive energy around me and just felt I had to document it." In addition to being a photographer, he worked for 20 years as a correction officer at Rikers Island. More info about him here. all photos: J. Shabazz
